Joshua Baldwin, of Stafford Road, Langley Green, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and was jailed for three and half years earlier this year.

As he was 17 at the time, the court ruled that he could not be identified by the media.

The order expired when he turned 18, and today police issued a statement which named him, together with a custody photograph.

A statement from Sussex Police said they were called to reports that a player had been stabbed in the neck at Langley Green Football Club, around 2.20pm on Saturday, October 24 last year.

Football players returned to the changing room at half time to find that it had been broken into and several phones and wallets had been stolen,

“The players found a bag containing most of the stolen items in woodland near the back of the playing field, along with a group of youths,” it said.

“When the footballers confronted the group, Baldwin confronted them and stabbed the victim, a 26-year-old man, in the neck.

“Baldwin of Stafford Road was arrested nearby and charged with GBH.”

Detective Sergeant Karrie Bohanna said: “Baldwin’s actions were violent and completely uncalled for. His behaviour was totally unacceptable and he has been punished as such. Thankfully the victim, despite needing hospital treatment, is recovering well.”
