'Then and now' calendar put together

Past, present and future combine in a photographic study of Bognor Regis.

The town's landmarks have been captured in a 2008 calendar.

Local historian Sylvia Olliver and Barnham photographer John Donabie teamed up to produce the rare visual study.

Among the views reproduced in the calendar are the East Parade bandstand, the Butlins seafront amusement arcade and Goodacres store, the Princess Elizabeth boating pool shaped like England and Wales and Waterloo Square.

The first three have their modern equivalents in the promenade bandstand, the Mountbatten Court flats, the Hothamton car park and Fitzleet 16-storey block of flats. Waterloo Square remains recognisable.

Mrs Olliver said the idea for the calendar was to share some of her collection of 3,000 postcards of Bognor.

'There's no point keeping the postcards in albums and boxes. So often, people ask me where The Pavilion was and they can see that by looking at this calendar.

'People who have lived here for 20 years have no idea what the town looked like before then. They can now visual it.

'The present photographs will also be useful in the future. What's here now will change as the planned redevelopment will take place and it will become the past.'

She spent three hours one Saturday morning alone accompanying Mr Donabie to ensure the correct camera angles to match those of the postcards.

She is donating 5 from every calendar's 11.99 price to the Chestnut Tree House children's hospice near Arundel.

Sarah Arnold, the hospice's community fundraiser for West Sussex, said: 'This calendar is a fantastic idea. I think the people of Bognor are going to love it.

'We are very grateful for Mrs Olliver's support. We rely so much on the community to help us.'

The calendar can be bought from Dragonfly Design and Print in The Arcade, Bognor Regis.
