Thousands of pounds handed to Crawley's community groups

Crawley Borough Council has awarded more than £650,000 in grants to community groups in the town.

The funding was distributed at a presentation afternoon held at the Civic Hall last Thursday (March 10).

The grants, made under the council’s community grants scheme for 2016/17 and 2017/18, are awarded to assist with the costs involved in new or existing activities, services and events that benefit Crawley residents and visitors.

Groups who successfully bid for council grants include:

Relate North and South West Sussex who received £24,425 for 2016/17 and £24,913 for 2017/18

Broadfield Youth and Community Centre, £35,000 (2016/17) and £36,000 (2017/18)

Crawley Festival, £9,504 (2016/17)

Crawley Community Voluntary Service, £122,787 (2016/17)

The Posh Club, £13,448 (2016/17) and £13,716 (2017/18)

Headway West Sussex £2,500 (2016/17) and £2,500 (2017/18)

Crawley Open House £47,736 (2016/17) and £48,691 (2017/18)

Crawley Museum Society, £50,900 (2016/17)

West Sussex Mediation Service £3,000 (2016/17) and £3,000 (2017/18)

Home Start Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex, £17,380 (2016/17) and £17,553 (2017/18)

Creative Future Brighton, £1,719 (2016/17) and £1,788 (2017/18)

Gatwick Detainees’ Welfare Group, £2,500 (2016/17) and £2,500 (2017/18)

WORDfest Crawley, £4,425 (2016/17)

Crawley United Reformed Church, £5,000 (2016/17)

Crawley Community Transport, £37,142 (2016/17) and £37,885 (2017/18

Celtic and Irish Cultural Society, £5,000 (2016/17).

Many of the community grants awarded will be put towards continuing services that offer support to vulnerable groups in Crawley.

For example, the Springboard Project, which has a base in Langley Green, was awarded more than £12,000 to help operating costs and launch its new Crawley Buddies group, a scheme designed to provide support to disabled kids with the help of young volunteers.

Nigel Scott-Dickeson, CEO of the Springboard Project, said: “We have received grant support from Crawley Borough Council through its community grants for a number of years now and to receive two generous awards for this combined amount is really appreciated, especially as we know how hard-pressed many local authorities are with their own budgets.”

Cabinet member for community engagement, Cllr Michael Jones, said: “Crawley Borough Council is delighted to have awarded grants to these fantastic community groups in Crawley.

“We are lucky to have a diverse range of groups in Crawley that carry out supportive and potentially life-changing work and it is vital that we continue to award grants to help them offer those services.”
