Call for '˜urgent action' on pothole-riddled road

A three-car crash in which a vehicle flipped over onto its roof has led to a call for immediate action to fix a pothole-riddled road.

The crash happened at around 7.30 am on Monday when a car overturned in Greenway, Horsham. The road has been plagued by potholes for nearly a year.

A police spokesman said two cars collided and one of them overturned and collided with another car.

The woman driving the overturned car escaped with minor injuries.

Cliff Comber, who lives in the road, said: “The whole street has complained about potholes for months.

“It’s a ridiculous situation which has been going on for a long time. You get lumps of flint flying up from the road surface shooting across the road.”

West Sussex County Council, which is responsible for highway repairs, said back in April that there were so many holes in the road that resurfacing was necessary. It said it hoped that the work could be included in this year’s repairs programme.

But local councillor Leonard Crosbie said this week that he was shocked when he learned of the accident - and called for immediate action to carry out resurfacing of the road.

“The problem appears to be that the foundation of the road is concrete and therefore it’s very strong,” he said. “The county council have said that the membrane on the top is the one that is breaking up. From their point of view it’s not a major problem.

“But in view of what’s happened I am strongly of the view that repairs should be done straight away. I will be pushing for immediate action.”

Fellow councillor Christine Costin, who has written several times to the county council requesting resurfacing, said: “Everyone has been very concerned about Greenway because the road surface is absolutely dreadful.

“It’s now very urgent we get something done, it’s absolutely vital.”

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said this week: “We are still looking to schedule resurfacing works for this location.”
