Crawley road flooded due to burst water main

A burst water main caused flooding in Crawley this afternoon (Saturday, October 17), flooding almost 20 homes.

According to reports, the incident took place around the Broadfield roundabout.

The AA said the flooding is affecting the A2220 Horsham Road westbound between Broadfield Drive (Broadfield Roundabout) and the A264.

The road is closed heading past Buchan Country Park, affecting traffic between Horsham and Crawley town centre.

Earlier in a tweet today, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service warned motorists to avoid Horsham Road and the Cheals roundabout area, as fire crews dealt with the incident.

The fire service added at least 17 homes were flooded as a result of today’s incident.

It added that the burst led to ‘significant flooding, approximately 30cm deep’, across a large area near the Horsham Road roundabout, Pelham Drive and Breezehurst Drive.

Firefighters have also been working with West Sussex County Council’s Resilience and Emergencies Team and the Red Cross to try to mimimise the impact of the flooding.

Southern Water teams also attended the scene.

Taking to Twitter, the company said: “The burst on a major water main in Bewbush in Crawley has now been isolated and customers’ water supply is secure.

“Due to the volume of water released (600 litres per second) during the burst unfortunately a small number of homes were flooded and we’re supporting these customers. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
