Jemima Scott was treated for shock at East Surrey Hospital after the road accident at a traffic light crossing in Longbridge Roundabout.

Lisa Scott, 47, of Reigate Road, said: “She got hit by the wing of the car just in front of me.

“She was thrown off to the ground, the bike was damaged and she was in a pile on the floor absolutely shocked.

“We were in Crawley on foot and everytime we went to cross the road she was looking all around her, she was very concerned that she needed to take total care that nothing will jump out at her that she hadn’t seen.”

Jemima, who is in Year 7 at Copthorne Prep School, is a keen cyclist and completed a 20 mile ride in Germany when she seven.

Lisa said: “She is scared of the road. We wanted to go out on the bikes this weekend and she immediately said no.

“Me and my partner are both very keen cyclists and my daughter cycles whenever we have got a safe place to take her.”

Surrey Police was called to the scene at 3.35pm on Saturday, January 30. A spokesman said no arrests were made and enquiries were continuing.

Lisa said Jemima was hit by a car after its driver failed to stop at a red light.

She said: “She feels completely let down by what’s supposed to be a safety system.

“As a child you’re brought upto believe if you obey the rules you will be okay.

“We were waiting together at the crossing waiting for the light to change green. We both agreed with each other it was green and started to go.

“She started to cross the road, I always take another look around to make sure nothing else was coming and in this case there was.

“My daughter was almost half way across the crossing, at this point I realised she [the driver] wasn’t making any attempt to stop and the only option we had was for us to get out of the way so I yelled at my daughter to get away and come back.”

Jemima, who was wearing a bright pink sweatshirt, was unable to return to the crossing in time. The car and two others stopped. A female passenger in one of the cars comforted Jemima.

Lisa said: “This woman instantly helped out and gave a helping hand to a stranger who was in need so it did help to regain my faith in humanity.”
