Initially two crews attended but due to the scale of the incident another two were called, a spokesman said.

Fifty per cent of the flat was damaged by flames while 100 per cent of the building was damaged by smoke.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the flames using a water jet, a hose reel and a dry riser. A positive pressure ventilation fan was also used to remove the smoke.

No-one was injured in the blaze, the spokesman added.

The cause of the fire is not known.
