Three men have been taken to hospital after a coach on its way to pick up pupils and a van crashed near Pulborough.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Station Road, Pulborough, near the Swan Corner junction, at 7.36am today (Wednesday November 4).

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said the Ford Transit van driver, 30, was in a serious but stable condition having suffered facial injuries and blood loss.

His passenger had chest and pelvic injuries.

Firefighters used hydraulic gear to free the men from the van before ambulance crews took them to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

The male coach driver, 68, was taken to St Richards Hospital in Chichester with wrist and hand injuries.

The air ambulance road vehicle was in attendance.

A police spokesman said the coach was understood to have been on its way to pick up pupils.

The spokesman said: “The driver’s injuries included a broken arm.

“The van involved was a white Ford Transit. Its driver and a passenger were trapped. Both were being freed by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service personnel to be taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. Both have serious injuries.

“The crash occurred on the bridge over the River Arun near two mini-roundabouts at the junction of the A29 London Road and the A283 Station Road.”

Roads in the area were closed and diversions set up.

Witnesses and people with information were asked to email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting Operation Seahawk.”

The scene has been cleared.

No train delays were reported at Pulborough station.
