Emergency services were called to the clifftop at Beachy Head last night after reports that a car had driven over close to Belle Tout Lighthouse.

The vehicle was found to have landed on the beach area.

Police said the driver was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire crews, paramedics and coastguards were involved in a major rescue on the clifftop in strong winds and the road was also closed between Birling Gap and Belle Tout.

Friends have taken to Facebook to pay tribute to Mr Maynard, a popular footballer.

He has been described as a “good friend and top bloke”.
