Truancy Tumbles

THE number of children playing truant from school has dropped across the county.

West Sussex County Council education welfare officers and Sussex Police carried out a countywide sweep at the end of November as part of an ongoing programme to maintain high levels of school attendance.

The teams visited Shoreham, Lancing, Bognor Regis, Pulborough, Crawley, Horsham, Chichester, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and Worthing on Wednesday, November 28.

A total of 42 children were stopped and 16 children were returned to school.

A year ago, 66 children were challenged on the streets.

Children stopped will have their attendance at school monitored.

All parents of unaccompanied children who were stopped will receive a letter regarding their children's absence and further action may be taken on specific cases.
