Uckfield carnival spectacular

ONE great day s entertainment plus one particularly good football result led to a fun, good-natured atmosphere at Uckfield s Carnival, on Saturday.

A crowd approaching 12,000 were kept enthralled throughout the day from the children s procession in the afternoon to the torchlight procession in the evening, where around 20 floats from visiting societies took to the streets. And as ever, Steven s funfair in Luxford Field provided thrills and spills for young and old.

Those that took a couple of hours out from proceedings to watch England s demolition of German football, in the early evening, were able to return to the fun in an even better mood.

Police were forced to make just one arrest during the day in contrast to towns such as Crowborough and East Grinstead, where fans over-keen to celebrate England s 5-1 win in Munich caused traffic problems by spilling out on to local streets.

The street collection raised a record amount of 3,400 for local good causes and charities.

Carol Watts, secretary of Uckfield s bonfire and carnival society, said: It was a brilliant day, and the carnival was really well supported. Even the rain stopped in time for Friday s firework display!
