Update: Abandoned lift falls on worker's leg in Crawley town centre

Emergency services were called to building works above the Paddy Power shop in Queens Square at 10.50am yesterday (Tuesday May 17).

Crawley Fire Station Commander David Hyde said works exposed the open lift on the second floor.

The 19-year-old man was clearing an area while straddling the car and the floor. It fell under his weight and landed on his left thigh, which was out of the car, and he was left hanging upside down with his leg trapped between the floor and the lift’s roof. Firefighters broke through a wall on the floor below and stabilised the lift. They freed the man with hydraulic gear. The worker, who had been given pain relief, was taken to East Surrey Hospital, said an ambulance service spokesman. The Health & Safety Executive is investigating.
