Firefighters and police are investigating the cause of an ‘unexplained’ fire which gutted a Horley community hall early this morning (Monday May 18).

Police was called to Albert Road at 1.17am after Strawson Hall, a wooden building used by community groups caught fire.

A spokesman said: “Surrey Police is assisting Surrey Fire and Rescue Service following an unexplained fire at a building in Horley.

“Officers were called to Albert Road, Horley at 1.17am today (Monday 18 May) to assist with road closures while Surrey Fire and Rescue Service tackled the blaze.

“The investigation is in its early stages and enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the fire.”

Alan Jones, Horley Town Council clerk, said the hut was all but destroyed.

He said: “I got within about 50 yards of it. The roof is buckled and burnt.”
