UPDATE: Felpham mother and daughter deaths - note found

The note claims the mother and daughter were at the beach that Friday (2 July) and, while in the water, Keira slipped and drowned.

As a result of this letter and ongoing enquiries, police would like to appeal for witnesses who think they may have seen Cathy and Keira Madden between 11am and 4pm on Friday.

They were known to visit the beaches at Felpham, Witterings, Climping and Pagham.

Detectives also want to hear from anyone who may have seen Cathy driving to East Sussex in her green Renault Megan with registration number T599 SAP between 8pm on Friday (July 2) and 6am on Saturday (July 3) or at Birling Gap, Eastbourne during the day on Saturday.

She was wearing a blue hooded top and blue tracksuit trousers.

DCI Nick Sloan of Sussex Police's Major Crime Branch said: "This is a very tragic story that we are trying to piece together.

"The note we found claims that Cathy took Keira to the beach on Friday where she drowned.

"Anyone who saw the pair at the beach on Friday may be able to significantly help us establish the truth.

"We have issued a new photograph of mother and daughter together in the hope it will jog the memory of someone who may have seen them that day.

"We have also released photographs of Cathy's car, which she would have driven to Birling Gap.

"Anyone else who we haven't yet spoken to, who knew Cathy and Keira and may be able to help us to understand these tragic circumstances, should also get in touch."

Anyone who saw Cathy and Keira at a beach on Friday, saw Cathy's car or who has any other useful information should contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting Operation Launton or email the investigation team direct on [email protected]
