Update: M23 reopens after woman airlifted from crash

The M23 was closed in both directions after the air ambulance was called to a serious collision.

Emergency services were called to a car going into a central reservation at its Maidenbower junction at 11.35am today (February 4).

Traffic was stopped both ways after the air ambulance was called to the scene.

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said a woman was cut out of the car and airlifted to hospital after she was trapped by its steering wheel.

A police spokesman said she was taken to St George’s Hospital in London with serious injuries.

Two lanes on the southbound carriageway remained closed at 2.09pm.

Traffic on the northbound carriageway was moving slowly.
