Update: Man in custody after police officer taken to hospital

A man has been held in police custody following a helicopter pursuit.

Several police cars were seen at Shipley Road, Ifield, at around 9pm yesterday (Wednesday April 29).

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “At just before 8.15pm on Wednesday 29 April a uniformed officer stopped a car in the Ifield Drive area of Crawley whereupon the driver and passenger, both men, ran off.”

During an attempt to arrest a man, the officer was injured.

The spokesman added: “He was taken to hospital to the East Surrey Hospital for treatment and observation. A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and failing to stop for police.

A second man is still being sought.

A witness from Gossops Green said: “We drove past a huge police presence in Ifield and there have been a couple of police helicopters flying over our house for a while.”
