Townsfolk took to social media to air their views after it was revealed the empty shops in the corner of Queen Square and Queensway will be made into a Decathlon sports store this summer.

Kelly Winterbottom said: “How disappointing - still at least it’s not another coffee shop!”

Sharon Boor said: “Well that’s a let down after all the hype and secrecy surrounding it.”

But Martin Carr Harding said: “Every time a shop opens someone will whine and moan about how we need something different.”

And Deborah Williams added: “I got told it was going to be a casino!”

The chain has started recruiting and will create 30 jobs at its Crawley store.

New store manager, Federico Fraguela, said: “Crawley has a lot to offer, we saw it as a great opportunity due its great catchment and excellent sport facilities and range of clubs. We very much like all the work that’s due to take place around the town centre too, particularly in Queens Square which will give us a great space to hold community events.”

A borough council spokesman said Decathlon works closely with the local sports clubs, schools and other community groups, often offering opportunities for free sports equipment through competitions and their charitable foundation ‘The Foundation’.

Decathlon will look to build strong relationships with sporting groups and individuals who could be brand ambassadors.

Crawley Borough Council cabinet member for economic development and planning Peter Smith said: “We are absolutely delighted that Decathlon are coming to Queens Square.

“It’s a result of a long period of time we have been wokring with them and the building owner to bring them together and make this work.”
