A spokesman from South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed the man had been airlifted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

He said: “His condition is not yet known, however he was airlifted from the scene which means he could have potentially serious injuries.”

The road is currently closed at the junction with Turners Hill Road for recovery work, police confirmed.
