Vicar bears tidings of holiday fun

An Aldwick church minister swapped his dog collar for a bear collar in some holiday fun.

The Rev Paul Kerley became Yogi Bear as part of summer club at the Aldwick Free Church (Baptist).

He certainly proved smarter than the average bear as he and some of the teenage helpers walked around Rose Green close to the church's premises in Gossamer Lane to promote the club. "It was hot but it was a lot of fun," he said. "I attracted a few hoots from some drivers.

"The children in the holiday club loved it and it's all about having some fun."

The club lasted between Tuesday and Friday to the end of August with plenty of enjoyment for the five- to 11-year-olds.

More than 50 of them went along on each of the first three days. They took part in crafts, singing and quizzes among other activities. The final session included a sausage sizzle and fancy dress.

The club '“ named Seaside Rock '“ was run by 20 adult church members and ten teenagers.

The story of Mr Kerley's Yogi disguise, courtesy of Octopussy Costumes, stemmed from his longing to become the Peugeot lion which can sometimes be seen greeting drivers outside the car dealership in Chichester on Saturdays.

He mentioned this to his congregation. One of the worshippers followed up his comments. She was able to borrow the bear costume after finding out that the lion was unavailable.
