The charity was asking shoppers to pick up just one or two of their suggested items for food parcels for homeless and other vulnerable people over the festive season. They also packed their shopping while raising awareness of the cause.

The volunteers were over-whelmed by the response.

Rosemary Benwell said: “Crawley people have been so generous to us this year. I had a man come back with his trolley and said, ‘Are these the right ones?’

“If people aren’t interested they aren’t being horrible. The thing is we’re just a local charity, we don’t have any overheads because we don’t employ anybody.”

Her husband Ted said: “Someone won a small prize on the lottery, £25, and donated a lot of it to us.”

They will be at Asda tomorrow (Saturday December 6) doing the same thing.
