Icklesham was in “The Times’’ last Monday when Timothy O’Sullivan of this village wrote about a school in the news ‘’Marlborough College was founded by Victorians for the sons of impoverished clergy-who included Anthony Blunt.

Rab Butler went having failed to win a scholarship to Harrow and the poet John Betjeman was also a pupil. Blunt was knighted for looking after the Queen’s paintings but had his title taken away when it was found he was a Russian spy. Betjeman was also in espionage.

Unfit for active service during the war he was sent to Dublin where his wit made him a welcome guest at diplomatic parties. In neutral Ireland he mixed with both Germans and Italians and sent home any useful information which he had gleaned.
