Volunteers out in force in Horley for a Spring Clean for the Queen

Businesses and residents were out in Horley last week '˜cleaning for the Queen' as part of a nationwide initiative to get the country ready for the monarch's 90th birthday.

On Friday March 4, Horley Town Council contractors from landscaping and maintenance firm Burley’s were clearing the area around the High Street car park beside the railway line.

In four hours two members of staff filled up a whole truck with rubbish.

Jim Alison said: “Burleys were keen to work with our clients to support this fantastic campaign. We carried out various clean ups on the day across the South East.

“As proud holders of the Royal Warrant for landscape management services, we were delighted to do our part to help celebrate her majesties 90th Birthday.”

The work continued on Saturday morning, this time on the River Mole where town and borough councillor David Powell had organised a community litter pick.

Mr Powell, who is mayor elect for Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, met volunteers in the car park of the Six Bells pub and they filled 11 sacks with rubbish from the stream.

He said: “It went superbly. We had nine people turn up, eight of whom were town and borough councillors and a lovely lady going by the name Taff. She hails from Wales.

“We completely filled 11 large sacks with litter and a battered TV. We de-littered the northern end of Court Lodge, Horley playing fields area and about a three-quarter mile length of the River Mole river bank.

“Much of the litter was drink cans from riverside picnics and parties that had been tossed in the long grass and nettles during last years summer months only to be exposed by the winter die-back.”

The Clean for the Queen campaign took place all over the UK over the weekend as part of preparations for Her Majesty’s birthday in June.

Supporters say it was a simple way the nation could show their gratitude for her work as the UK’s longest serving monarch.
