VOTE: Leisure strategy for Littlehampton is extended by council

David Warne, chairman of the East Beach Residents’ Association, said the council’s decision, announced yesterday (Wednesday), to allow more time to discuss proposed sweeping changes to leisure facilities within the district was a “positive step forward in the right direction”.

The group is fighting to save the much-loved Windmill Entertainment Centre and Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre.

Mr Warne said: “This is excellent news for us. The community has been crying out for the district council to listen and it looks like they have heard us.

“Following our community meeting last month a working group was formed. Obviously, giving that group more time to work alongside the council has been a positive step forward in the right direction.”

Around 3,000 people have given their views on the plans put forward by Colliers International to improve leisure and culture services across the area.

The strategy proposes using the Windmill site and other land nearby to build a hotel and create a new watersports facility.

It also suggests selling off all or part of the swimming and sports centre site, and use proceedings either to refurbish the existing venue, or to build a new leisure centre next to The Littlehampton Academy – something which campaigners say simply isn’t an option.
