Walkers raise cash for eco-pavilion

AN appeal to build an environmental centre in Lewes is gathering strength.

Supporters of the proposed Linklater Pavilion have already helped to raise more than 310,000 to build a centre for the study of environmental change on the Railway Land Trust nature reserve.

In June, 22 sponsored walkers completed a 15 km course to Castle Hill National Nature Reserve and back, and raised an impressive 6,000.

Hero of the day was Rob Cash, 41, from Seaford, who raised 1,650.50 and completed a third of the distance, despite suffering from a rare genetic condition and scoliosis (curvature of the spine).

John Parry, chairman of the Railway Land Wildlife Trust, was optimistic they will be able to raise the 750,000 needed to build the centre.

He said: 'Planning approval and the tremendous support to date from many people, has given us real hope of bringing this project to fruition.

'Our aim is to provide a centre that will help explain and explore environmental and climate change for our children and future generations, and also provide a practical base for adults with learning disabilities who have contributed so much to the site over the last three years.

'Now we need a further local boost to show big funders that Lewes means business!'
