Why apprenticeships can benefit businesses

The discussion took place at Worthing College and was the key topic at the second JP Business Club networking event, which took place on Thursday, March 24.
Leading the breakfast meeting was college vice principal Paul Riley, marketing and events manager Anne Pithie, and apprenticeship administrator Rebekah Gough.

Hide AdRebekah is a former HR apprentice and now runs the scheme at the college.
She said: “Apprenticeships enable young people to gain the work skills and confidence needed to progress into a long term career.
“They help build up not only work skills, but personal skills such as delivering presentations.
“Now that I’m completing a part time degree in business, I can relate to the topics that I’m studying as they come up in my everyday job.”

Hide AdSince 2010 there have been more than two million apprenticeships started in the UK and these are available in at least 170 industries.
At Worthing College, apprenticeships fall into eight different categories ranging from activity leadership, and leisure management, to business and administration, and IT.
During the talk, it was explained how apprenticeships are proven to be a cost effective way for employers to develop their own talent and to ensure the sustainability of their workforce.
On hand were a number of current apprentices who were able to talk to the business community about how they were benefitting from the scheme.

Hide AdThey also led a tour around the college for those who had not been to the site in Sanditon Way.
The JP Business Club meets on the last Friday of the month, unless it’s a bank holiday.
The next networking event will take place at Spofforths, Donnington Park, Chichester, on Friday, April 29 from 8am until 9.30am.
