Summer Fete and Dog Show: Winchelsea’s annual Summer Fete and Dog Show takes place tomorrow (Saturday) in the Cricket Field, by the New Hall, from 1.45 to 4.30pm. All are invited to participate in a great afternoon out with musical entertainment by the Battle Town Band. On offer will be a BBQ, Pimm’s Bar, Afternoon Tea, Craft Stalls, Ice-Creams and Grand Raffle with fantastic prizes. Pett Level Rescue Boat will be there, plus an Adults & Children’s Tombola and a Bottle Stall. The New Hall Society along with the Bowls Club will be running an old fashioned Bric-a-Brac stall which will include old books, small artefacts and jewellery. Don’t forget to bring your dog for the Fun Dog Show. Entry categories range from titles such as: cutest pup, handsomest dog and best rescue so there is a pretty good chance of winning. As the owner of a 9-year-old Collie who came second in the ‘Best Veteran’ category at Icklesham Fete last Saturday, it was a proud moment for me to see him sporting his blue and white rosette. The proceeds from this year’s Winchelsea Fete will go towards the St Thomas’ Church Roof Appeal, the Pipewell Gate Appeal, Rother Responders, Pett Level Rescue Boat and the Rye Sea Cadets. During the Fete there is an entry-free opportunity to visit the cellar of Blackfriars’ Barn and see the medieval drawings of ships etched on the walls. The two tours are organised by the Archaeological Society and begin at 2pm and 3.30pm at Blackfriars’ Barn.

Mad Hatter’s T Party: There will be a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Backfield Place, Rectory Lane on Wednesday August 12th from 2pm. The Mayoress of Winchelsea, Mrs Ann Spencer, has made the appeal to hold the fund-raising event in aid of St Michael’s Hospice. Entry cost is £5 which includes, food, fun, games, swimming and tea; also Pimms, tea and cakes for adults. Everybody is welcome and if it is raining the alternative venue is the New Hall.

Fairlight End: The Garden Society has organised an outing on Thursday September 3rd to Fairlight End, Pett which is a garden that opened for the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) in June. It is a sloping garden of three acres with delightful views, consisting of wild flower meadows, terraced herbaceous borders, two natural ponds joined by a stream and some interesting formal landscaping. Chris Hutt, one of the owners, will be giving a conducted tour which will be followed by tea and cake. The inclusive cost will be £8, all of which goes to charity and please meet there at 3pm, after parking in the Pett Village Hall Car Park. If you would like to come along on this trip you should let Howard Norton (secretary) know soon, as there is a limit of 20 people and he will also need to co-ordinate the transport.

Winchelsea Beach

Church worship: St Richard’s Church is hosting the Hastings and Rother Worship Baton Event tomorrow (Saturday) from 4 to 5pm and all are welcome. The event involves 60 hours of continuous worship occurring at several different churches over the weekend between Rye and Hastings and will include hymns and readings. After St Richard’s the baton will be passed on to Fairlight and Pett churches.

Bingo winners: Every other Wednesday all are welcome to meet for an evening of Cash Bingo in the Community Hall at 7.15pm. The next session is Wednesday August 12th and there will be refreshments, a raffle and also note that players must be over 16.

Summer services: St Richard’s Church is having a summer break over August and events will resume in September. Thus the Sunday afternoon prayer services will begin at 3.30pm on September 6th and the next Fellowship Lunch will be on Friday September 25th. Regardless of these changes the Sunday morning worship services will be as usual at 9.15am.
