Winchelsea

History talk: The talk on the Battle of Waterloo by Anthony Kimber will take place tomorrow July 25th in the Court Hall at 3pm. It is free for members and under 16s or £4 p.p. with proceeds in aid of Archaeology in Winchelsea. The Battle of Waterloo marked the final defeat of Napoleon by the Duke of Wellington and allies in Belgium on June 18, 1815. After seizing control of France and crowning himself emperor in 1804 Napoleon instigated a series of wars in order to expand his despotism across Europe. His eventual defeat by the British and Prussians ended his reign and France’s domination in Europe and the empire was disbanded. Almost 150 years later Europe began to regroup and its expansion has continued into present times. Another victory now being sought is Britain’s goal of securing a better deal or exiting from the EU. The forthcoming referendum on whether Britain should stay or leave the EU is scheduled to take place between 2016 and before the end of 2017, though not on the same day as the May 2016 UK elections.
