Woman hit by car after trying to stop Bewbush brawl, court hears

Hansley Robertson, 25, of Britten Close, Bewbush, Kenny Robertson, 23, of Martyrs Avenue, Langley Green, Doris Robertson, 49, St Aubin Close, Broadfield, and a 17-year-old boy appeared at Lewes Crown Court today (Tuesday September 22).

They are each charged with violent disorder and affray and Kenny Robertson with dangerous driving in relation to a fight near the entrance to Bewbush Community Park on July 27 2014.

A witness told how she was struck by a car after she attempted to break up the fight. The court heard she was walking to a shop to buy a bar of chocolate when she saw up to ten men and youths fighting.

She said: “There was a boy on the floor without a top on. He was dark-skinned and probably under 25, and he was being kicked and punched. I went over and screamed at them to stop but obviously they didn’t hear me or take any notice, so I walked away because I thought it was dangerous. They were all attacking him - I thought they were going to kill him, the way he was on the floor like that.”

She walked away but stopped nearby to talk to a neighbour, while more passers-by stopped to watch the fight.

She said: “I saw a car in front of me, a silver car, and I said to my neighbour, ‘I’m going home’. She was going to walk with me. All of a sudden he revved his engine, drove at me and hit me on my right hip. I fell back into the bushes, smacked my head and got gravel all in my left hand. He drove off. I was in agony, and the next thing I know I was in an ambulance.”

She suffered severe bruising.

Another witness said he heard a ‘commotion’ as he approached the roundabout in his car. He described seeing a silver Vauxhall Astra parked at one of the roundabout’s exits and two Afro-Caribbean men fighting. One was younger and topless. A third man entered the affray. The witness said: “The youth with no top on managed to pick up a BMX bike that was on the floor, he managed to arch it over his head and launched it at the Vauxhall Astra. It hit the windscreen and cracked it. I heard the engine rev loudly and I heard the tyres screech. He drove off on the wrong side of the roundabout. There was a woman in a hysterical state, she was screaming ‘I’ve been hit, I’ve been hit’.”

The youth with no top collapsed on the floor and was bleeding, he added.
