Worthing man and sons to walk for charity

AN East Worthing man, his sons and friends are preparing to undertake the walk of a lifetime in memory of his father, who died from cancer earlier this year.

John Patrick, 48, and his sons Tom, 16, and William, 14, will head to the Himalayas next Friday to complete their sponsored challenge of trekking to the Mount Everest base camp.

Mr Patrick, of Chesswood Road, completed the challenge 22 years and always promised to take his sons one day '“ and when his father Cliff died in January, aged 81, they decided to do it to raise money for St Barnabas House, which cared for him during his final days.

Mr Patrick said: "The boys reminded me I once said I would take them to Everest and when Dad died we decided to do it to raise money for the place which cared for him. We are looking forward to it '“ but it might be difficult to get used to the altitude."

Mr Patrick and his sons will be part of a team of friends, some of whom will be raising money for other charities.

Included in the team will be Ian Walker, who will be walking in aid of the British Heart Foundation, and Phil Goacher, who will be doing it in support of a children's charity supported by the Round Table.

Phil is hoping to "conker" Everest in another sense as well '“ by holding the world's highest conker match when he reaches the base.
