The year Glorious won and Paul punched Our 'Enry

But that’s exactly what 11-year-old Paul Goodge did when he met Henry Cooper in Broadfield in 1981.

Our ‘Enry, as the champ was fondly known, was at John Snow travel, in Broadfield Barton, where ex-England and Sussex cricketer John was introducing local businessmen to his new travel agency.

Young Paul certainly had a decent tale to tell when he went back to school – after all, he had socked the jaw which was once socked by the mighty Muhammad Ali!

Another group of lads who enjoyed a knock-out performance in 1981 were the players in a Sunday morning junior football team called Glorious.

Luck had not been with them that season and they had failed to win any of their 12 matches. Goalkeeper Jason Maybank had a particularly tough time, conceding 159 goals while the strikers only scored 11.

But their never say die attitude earned them a lot of respect from parents and opponents alike – and things started to look up when one team only managed to beat them 6-2.

The following week, though, was the stuff dreams were made of and the Glorious lads beat Falcons 4-2.

Two Hazelwick students also had plans for a big achievement – this time, rollerskating from New York to Miami.

Richard Faulkner and Paul Tortoise, both 16, had planned the 1,400-mile feat to raise money for the Year For The Disabled.

The lads had already taken part in a 24-hour skate round the playground at Hazelwick and planned to hone their long-distance skills with a jaunt from London to Bristol.

Does anyone know if the dynamic duo completed their American adventure?

While Richard and Paul were planning their journey, eight Crawley men were taking to the saddle to cycle from Redruth to Cornwall in aid of the town’s Cancer Relief Campaign.

Over in Pound Hill, the brownies and guides of the 2nd Pound Hill St Barnabas Pack were saying goodbye to two stalwart members.

Miss Olive Lott had been captain for the past 25 years and Mrs Pat Read had assisted her as Grey Owl for the past 12 years. They were presented with a rose bowel and a goblet as their respective parting gifts.

Our last picture shows three little girls bringing flowers to their much-loved lollipop lady who had been injured in an accident with a car.

Twins Lisa and Sharon Matthews, five, and their big sister Tracey, 7, brought Irene Tansley a bouquet of flowers while she was under observation in Crawley Hospital.

The girls had been with Mrs Tansley when the accident happened outside Our Lady Queen of Heaven School, in Langley Green.

It wasn’t the only bouquet the lollipop lady received. The driver of the car also brought flowers when he dropped in to see her.
