Youngsters help raise hundreds through Race for Life schools programme

St Margaret's School hosted a special event on the school's playing fields as part of Race for Life's schools programme.

Around 100 youngsters, aged from 5 to 11 years old, joined forces with parents, teachers and governors, to take on cancer and walk, jog or run in aid of Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work on Saturday.

To help the pupils prepare, teachers used a school resource kit specially created by the charity.

Debbie Webb, founder and owner of Activ8 for Kids, said: “I am the director of Activ8 and also a member of the school’s PTA. I am personally motivated by this cause and as my daughters attend the school I offered to organise this event. Activ8 provided all the resources needed to run the event free of charge to the school, my time was provided as a parent at the school.

“Even though the weather was bad and the rain was tipping down, we had a great turn out from the families of St Margaret’s School. They took part in a mass warm up in the hall before going onto the field. The children ran for 30 minutes and were able to complete as many laps as they could in that time. At the end of every lap they had their arm stamped. The children were aged from four to 11 years and completed between five and 50 laps each!

“The sponsorship money has already started coming in and we are hoping to raise £500 for Cancer Research.

“The children have had an assembly where they learnt about the work Cancer Research does and they were very keen to help raise money to help to make people better in the future. Many of them have lost a relative to this disease and the families at the school were so supportive of this worthwhile cause. At the end of the 30 mins run the children all came back to the hall where it was dry and received their medals. All the parents and teachers gave the children a huge cheer and applause.”
