LETTER: Choosing between Heathrow and Gatwick is the wrong question

It was surprising to see the East Sussex Rail Alliance calling for a second runway at Gatwick to improve rail services.

They were silent about the huge concerns raised about the contribution aviation expansion would make to carbon emissions and air quality, never mind congestion of roads, shortage of housing for workers at an expanded airport, loss of beautiful countryside and erosion of the quality of life of everyone in the South East. Surely there are better ways to improve rail services than to build a new runway at Gatwick and all that goes with it? The Airports Commission has left it to MPs later this year to choose between expanding Heathrow (which they’ve recommended) or Gatwick. The Green Party will be standing alongside all those urging MPs to conclude that choosing between Heathrow and Gatwick is the wrong question and to decide “none of the above”.
