LETTER: Councillor’s Human Rights hypocrisy

In the November 11 edition, Cllr Duncan Crow praised freedom and Human Rights in general, yet the Conservative party which he supports is hypocritical on such vital concepts.

He complimented Burma for recently having democratic elections, yet his government invites dictators such as General el-Sisi of Egypt, a man who overthrew a democratically elected government and imprisons or kills journalists who criticise him.

It is his same Tory government which declines to review the UK’s arms sales to all kinds of authoritarian regimes. It is his Tory government which is re-introducing the ‘Snoopers Charter’ to collect en masse all our online data and tinker with our hard-won Human Rights Act on ideological grounds.

But then again, this is expected from a government whose leader promised not to cut tax credits for the poorest families, and yet went back on his word and almost did cut tax credits last month.

Mr Crow, there is a resolute approach to dealing with terrorists and tyranny, but when fighting such monsters, your government must take heed not to become one.

Does not inspire confidence

It does not exactly inspire taxpayer-confidence in how finances are handled at County Hall Chichester (which operates with no chief executive), when an anonymous WSCC “spokeswoman” refuses to accept Freedom of Information figures revealing 24 of its senior staff earn £100,000 or more - and insist its only 21.
