At this time of debate about immigration we are looking for new members for the Tinsley House Independent Monitoring Board (IMB).
Tinsley House is an Immigration Removal Centre near Gatwick A irport. It houses a hundred or so detainees who stay until they are deported, taken to another centre, or released on either a permanent or temporary basis. Some will stay only a few days, others will be there for weeks, some for many months.
The IMB members are independent volunteers who come from all sections of the community and are officially appointed by the Home Office. Our role is to ensure that the detainees are treated with respect and fairness while they are living at the centre and to the best of our ability check that it is run in a safe and humane way.
We do not provide legal advice to the detainees or judge them in any way. We probably all have very different opinions about immigration, refugees and asylum seekers but we put such opinions aside and work together from a shared desire to see that the Tinsley House residents are treated fairly while they are deprived of their liberty in this country.
This is not a paid role but travel expenses are paid and full training and support are provided. If any of your readers are interested in applying they should go to www.imb.org.uk or call 020 3334 3265 for more information.
