LETTER: Park event irony

I visited Worth Park to enjoy the opening of the renovated Victorian gardens.

A fantastic event that so many people attended. There were hundreds of smiling faces.

I’d have been very happy to attend and enjoy it in a non-political way, but no, this is Labour we’re dealing with, so here we go.

Sadly, Cllr Mullins foolishly tried to politicise the opening by announcing to the large crowd that it was ‘no longer a privileged park, it is now the people’s park’.

What a ridiculous thing to say!

Apparently wealthy people should not build themselves beautiful architectural gardens - not even 130 years ago. And whilst Labour praised the beauty of the renovated park I wondered, had they forgotten how their political games whilst in opposition in 2012 risked Crawley losing the £2.4 million grant to renovate the park in the first place. Fortunately, the Lottery Fund gave us an extension and Conservatives were able to make this happen. Had they not, Worth Park would have lost out on the grant and none of the renovation work would have happened.

It’s worth pointing out that many Labour councillors (not all were there), following the switching on of the fountain, headed to the exclusive VIP tent for tea and scones where ‘the people’ weren’t allowed.I have to laugh at the irony.
