The South & South East in Bloom awards 2015, sponsored by Southern Water, were held at the Amex Stadium in Brighton on September 11th.

I attended with two neighbours from Boswell Road and we were delighted to be awarded Outstanding level 5 for the 5th year running for our street garden in the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ category. May I take this opportunity to thank all the residents and friends who have helped out this year to keep our patch looking good.

May I also congratulate 7th Crawley Beavers, Bolney Court and St. Andrews Church on their fantastic awards. We all started out as Let’s FACE it! projects whilst Ruth Growney was the co-ordinator, (Thankyou Ruth), and I’m sure I speak for all the groups that have taken up this opportunity on offer from Crawley Borough Council by saying what a brilliant initiative it is.

Huge congratulations also to the larger entries in this years competition. Crawters Brook got Silver, Worth Park Silver Gilt, Memorial Gardens Gold and Crawley as a small city got Gold. A fantastic well done to Kate Taylor-Smith of Crawley Borough Council on her first year at the ‘In Bloom’ helm and congratulations to Christian Threader of the amenities team who became a ‘Community Champion’. His hard work and support for the entries is much appreciated and it’s a shame he wasn’t there to accept his award in person. Thanks also to all members of the amenities teams who help to keep Crawley cleaner and greener.

Southern Water are ending their 10 year sponsorship of the awards this year so if any large companies would be interested in finding out more about what is involved, please feel free to contact me via the newspaper and I’ll put them in touch with the relevant contact. Roll on next years competition and ‘Keep Gardening’ everyone!

Shaz Ottley, Tilgate
