I sympathise with south coast residents who want a better rail link with London (“Train Campaigners Call for a second Gatwick Runway”), but the idea that a second runway at Gatwick would help them is sadly wrong.
The current rail link is scheduled to be upgraded regardless of whether Gatwick gets a 2nd runway. The upgrade will not be enough if a 2nd runway is built. Gatwick Airport Ltd. has made proposals (for which it only offers to pay part) to cope with extra air passengers, but has ignored the major effects of increased commuting into and around the Crawley area. This would put pressure on all forms of transport, both road and rail.
All of our present transport problems would get worse if Gatwick gets a second runway.
