Bizarre end to Sunday football season

THE destination of the Hastings & East Sussex Sunday Football League championship remains undecided despite both title rivals completing their fixtures.

Long time leaders Silverhill Club and Ridge West Garage each boast 10 wins, two draws and two defeats from their 14 matches. Not only that, but both teams have a +45 goal difference.

Silverhill have scored more goals which, under normal circumstances, would have earned them the accolade, but the league "have got to look at certain matters", according to honorary secretary Robin Powell.

Powell, who said he was unable to put a date on a definitive outcome, explained: "The title situation is under review. In our league, it is decided by goal difference and then goals scored, but certain matters have come to light which I was made aware of on Sunday.

"What's got to happen first is that the disciplinary committee have got to sit and this normally happens within 14 days of Sunday. Then the full management committee is meeting on March 14. We don't want to wait until March 14, so once the disciplinary committee have met, we will then call an Extraordinary General Meeting.

"I do think this is good for the League because the interest is fantastic. People have turned round to me and said Sunday morning football is dead in this town, but this totally contradicts anyone that says that."

The tie has arisen because Ridge West, who hammered Bexhill AAC 15-2 in their penultimate match, were again in prime goalscoring form on Sunday as they swept aside Oddfellows Arms 8-0. Terry Payne, Matt Syrett and Ben Ferguson all struck twice, while Dan Spice and Shaun Loft also netted.

Ridge West were also awarded the points from their other league fixture against The Odds after the match had to be postponed earlier in the season due to the latter's failure to field a team.
