Boro are favourites now, says Rooks boss

STEVE King this week threw the weight of expectancy on local rivals Eastbourne Borough after Garry Wilson's men went top of Blue Square South.

The Sports' 3-2 win over Eastleigh on Tuesday night leap-frogged them over the Rooks to go clear of the Rooks at the top of the table.

The Priory Lane outfit have steadily reeled in Lewe's lead in recent weeks, and have gone from having a nine-point deficit to enjoying a two-point lead.

Borough boss Wilson last week claimed Lewes were still favourites for the title, despite being on the verge of overtaking them.

And this week, King retorted, "He (Wilson) said Lewes were favourites because we were top of the league and had got the points in the bag.

"What's he going to say now? They are top, they've got the points on the board and they are the favourites. The pressure's on them now.

"But we'll just concentrate on what we're doing and keep chasing. There's a long way to go.

"I said at the turn of the year, after we had just beaten them, that this league title race will go all the way.

"We set our sights on the play offs at the start of the season anything above that was a bonus, people are losing sight of that

"We never said that our objective would be to win the league, although every manager wants to win the league.

"But the reality is that we have a chance of making the play-offs we're nearly there and we're still in with a chance of winning the league."

King watched Borough beat Eastleigh to go top. He said, "For the first 20 minutes they were very good and went 3-0 up.

"But Eastleigh came back into it and in the second half it was like the Alamo and they (Borough) were just hanging on in the end. But they got the result so what can you say?"

King and his players are to "take in" a football league game on Saturday as they make the joirney west for Sunday afternoon's game with Newport (kick off 1pm).

He said, "Newport are a tough outfit, similar to Eastbourne. They're a big side and direct with long balls. They've got pace up front and have only lost one at home this season. Their home record is as good as anybody's."

Talking about the recent bad blood between the two clubs, resulting in both games between the teams being rescheduled for early Sunday afternoon kick offs he said, "All I'll I'm thinking of is just winning a football match. I can't control the politics that surrounds the game."

Jay Conroy is suspended for the trip to South Wales. The game against Braintree Town that had been scheduled to take place on Tuesday, barely 48 hours after the Newport game, has been switched to Tuesday, March 11.

Stefan Cox has gone on a month's loan to Horsham.

"He needs the games," said King.

"But he'll make an impact on them during the month."
