Clark is a rising star

A YOUNG Crawley golfer has won a sports bursary that will help him balance academic studies with his golf.

Clark Weatherall (18), who is a second-year management student at Royal Holloway, has played golf since he was six, competitively since he was 13, and plays to a handicap of two.

He is currently not a member of a golf club in Sussex since he lives and studies in Surrey, but in the past he has been a member of Ifield, Effingham Park and Chartham Park golf clubs and regularly visits Ashdown Forest Golf Club, where he has lessons with his long-time teacher, professional Nick Scott.

His current achievements in golf include being twice club champion at Effingham Park and a summer matchplay champion.

Royal Holloway '“ part of the University of London '“ established its Student Talented Athlete Recognition Scheme (Stars) in 1996 to provide bursaries and academic support to assist student elite athletes during their time at the college.

Clark said: "I regard earning acceptance on to the Stars programme as one of my most important achievements. My ambitions for the future are to continue improving in my sport while earning my degree, then, after completing university, attempt to secure a place on the European Tour and play golf at the very higgest level."
