Club celebrates winning grant

WORTHING D & D Basketball Club is one of the first successful applicants for a Grassroots Grant in West Sussex.

It asked for 1,500 to help fund the evening sessions held once a week at Durrington High School Sports Hall for children aged from eight to 18.

With the help of the grant, the club can remain accessible to all children and enter teams into the Sussex Youth Basketball League.

Penny Marshall, the group's treasurer, said: "We are delighted to receive this money from Grassroots.

"Now we can stay open to all the children who want to play basketball in Worthing."

Grassroots Grants is a Government programme run in the county by Sussex Community Foundation (SCF) and offers grants of up to 5,000 over the next three years to small community groups to help with new or existing projects, training, to buy equipment or for repairs to buildings.

The foundation has 1.9m to distribute in small grants before March 2011 and groups can apply throughout the year. Anyone interested in applying should contact the SCF on 01273 403980 or email [email protected] or visit the website at www.sussex
