CRICKET: Local round-up (May 27)

LITTLEHAMPTON Cricket Club captain Gareth Challen blamed a "monumental collapse" for his side's seven-run defeat at Goring on Saturday in Sussex League Division 3 West.

Littlehampton were 107-3 but collapsed to 135 all out to fall to their first defeat of the year, after starting the season with two victories.

Challen said: "We just want to forget about it. We just didn't apply ourselves with the bat and I'm to blame for that as well.

"I should have seen it home with Benn but got out playing a silly shot, although we still should have seen it through.

"Our confidence still isn't very high after last year and when we started losing wickets, I think last year started creeping into our minds and we started panicking under the pressure.

"They had put on 25 or 30 for their last wicket but we couldn't really do much about it. Plus, you can't really grumble when you bowl a side out for 142.

"Luke Vinter bowled really well for his eight wickets and was really disappointed at the end to have lost.

"This has given us a kick up the backside and shows us that we're not going to win any games easily this season.

"We've got to play to our full potential every week."

Vinter took 8-38 from 15.2 overs to move on to 19 wickets for the season in just three games.

Ellis Woolley and Ross Brown, with 23, were Goring's top scorers.

Benn Challen top-scored with 44 for Littlehampton but Graham Blann, with 29, and Chris Heberlein, with 28, were their only other players to reach double figures.

In the same division, Arundel lost by seven wickets at Slinfold after being dismissed for just 154.

All of Arundel's top five reached double figures but Aussie Edward Lewis' 33 was their top score.

Slinfold raced to victory in just 22.3 overs as opener Jonathan Augustus blasted 115 not out from just 68 balls, with 13 fours and seven sixes.

East Preston are still looking for their first win of the season in West Sussex Invitation League Division 1 after a seven-wicket loss at Southwater.

After being stuck into bat, EP scored 229-7 from 48.5 overs, although they had been 167-1 from 32 overs.

Colin Smith smashed 84 from 104 balls with 15 fours and one six and Jack Sunderland hit 72 off 82 deliveries, with 12 fours and one six as they put on 115 for the second wicket.

But, once Sunderland was out, with the score on 167, wickets fell regularly and four of EP's batsmen were caught on the boundary looking for quick runs.

Paul Osborne and Alex Harding, with 79 and 77 not out respectively, took Southwater to victory and EP captain Andy Reeves said: "We were looking for 240 to 250, so were about 10 runs short, but even 250 might have been a struggle to defend.

"Both sides had their fair share of luck and it was a pitch where wickets came in clusters.

"When we got Johann Brouwer out, we thought we might have been in with a sniff but we just couldn't put the pressure on their batsmen.

"It's disappointing not to get our first win but we've got Clymping on Saturday, so need to pick up some points from that."

Rustington crashed to a 115-run defeat at Brighton & Hove 3rd in Division 4.
