Horley beaten in penultimate pre-season game, Hyde powers 3rd XI to win at Ripley, victory for under-13s

The conditions were perfect for a bat but, for the third week running, Charlie Robins lost the toss and Horley had to field first.

Sanderstead’s number one Chris Bauman raced to 98 from not many deliveries while his opening partner Tyler Ward elegantly made 84 to give the home side a perfect start.

A few cameos from the middle order helped Sanderstead reach a total of 255 from their 45 overs, which seemed a little under par.

Adam Stephenson and Matt Puttick were the pick of the bowlers at the death, and picking up three wickets each, while Sam Remfry got Bauman out.

It was down to Horley to knock the runs off, which they had done with ease in previous games.

They started well with Regan Derham driving to the boundary in the first over. However Ben Remfry fell early with a loose shot caught well in the covers.

Sam Remfry came in at three and was shortly Horley’s next casualty, being trapped in front.

Derham continued on and looked like he was the one to take Horley close to the target. However, he was out to an inside edge onto middle stump.

Nathan Bailly and Ben Davies fell soon after that, followed by Jon Barnett with a snick to first slip from Simon Carter, who’s tricky opening spell proved to be the deciding factor as Horley had lost their top five in the first 20 overs.

Ross Nel found the boundary with some lovely strokes and ended not out, but Horley were way short of the target, posting 180 all out after 39 overs.

HORLEY CC 2ND XI

The Horley CC 2nd XI lost to Sanderstead CC 2nds by 121 runs.

On a chilly, overcast day Horley’s skipper Darren Croft put Sanderstead straight in to bat.

Chris Cosham and Anthony Puttick opened the bowling and during a solid eight overs each they managed to get both of the openers out cheaply and their number four, Cosham with one wicket and Puttick with two scalps.

Unfortunately for Horley, Sanderstead’s number three, Ryan Brotherton and number five, Rory Brooks put on a monster fourth-wicket stand and really accelerated the run rate, until teenager Aryan Patel came on and got Brotherton out for 92 in his first over, then picked up the wicket of Brooks for 80 runs a couple of overs later.

However, the run-rate did not slow down and Sanderstead finished on 260-6 from 40 overs.

Horley’s openers Andrew Thomas and Matt Ware started the chase but Sanderstead’s first two bowlers produced a phenomenal opening spell which restricted runs but couldn’t find a breakthrough, until skipper Richard Key and off spinner Matt Harris dismissed Ware and Thomas in quick succession.

Horley lost another quick wicket, then Lewis Tomkins and Puttick steadied the ship, with a very solid partnership, with Tomkins ending on 24 and Puttick top-scoring with 29.

After a batting collapse and with the loss in sight, number eight Zeeraq Mustafa hit a quickfire 25 including a huge six, but it was too little too late, with Horley finishing on 139-8.

HORLEY CC 3RD XI

A fabulous unbeaten 128 from George Hyde took Horley CC 3rd XI to a nine-wicket win over Ripley CC 3rd XI.

Hyde, playing his second game back at Horley after a five-year break, proved to be in a class of his own and destroyed the home attack with his powerful hitting, battering one six into the front wall of the clubhouse and completely clearing the building with another.

Ripley batted first and 14-year-old Ben Stewart was the pick of the Horley attack, taking 4-21 from six overs, all clean bowled, and only missing out on a five-for because he bowled one batter off a no-ball.

The other wicket-takers were Jack Jee (bowled), Alex Field (a catch by Evan Grimwood) and Dave Bunn (a superb diving catch by Hyde) as Ripley made 194-7 from 40 overs.

After Horley’s first wicket fell with the score on two, Hyde and skipper Jorell Wildman combined for an unbeaten partnership to take Horley to victory with 199-1 from 18.5 overs.

Hyde started steadily enough, but after he reached 50 and his offer to retire was turned down by Ripley, he started to really swing the bat and his second 50 came in just 17 balls.

He hit 21 fours and four sixes, scoring his best-ever score of 128 not out from just 65 balls in all.

Wildman was playing an excellent innings at the other end and made 46 not out from 48 balls, including eight fours.

HORLEY CC SUNDAY FIRST XI

The Horley CC Sunday firsts won away at Trinity Mid-Whitgiftians CC by 47 runs.

After a rain-delayed start, Horley batted first and made 188 all out from 39.3 overs. Stuart MacPherson top-scored with 57 and Luke Smith made 30.

Trinity’s reply started very slowly and they were soon well behind the required run-rate, but wickets were hard to come by too and the hosts passed 90 with just three down.

Then Jon Barnett took three wickets in one over to put Horley firmly in charge and they bowled Trinity out for 141 from 37.3 overs.

Alex Field (2-12 from 6.3 overs) took the last two wickets and Kieran Childs also took two, while Ben Stewart and Naveed Sherwani picked up one each.

Smith bagged three catches, Matt Puttick one and a stumping and Richard Waddington got a run-out.

HORLEY CC SUNDAY STROLLERS

Horley CC’s Sunday Strollers played Outwood Millermen CC away and the game ended in a draw.

The hosts made a good score of 221-8 in 45 overs, with Dave Nelson top-scoring on 57.

The pick of Horley’s bowlers was Ryan Bunn with four wickets for 16.

Skipper Dave Childs and club chairman Colin Terry opened for a change and made 40 and 16 respectively. Teenager Bunn made it an excellent all-round game by hitting 43, before Nick Waddington came in and struck 50 not out.

Horley ended up on 214 after their allocated 35 overs so were just short of victory.

HORLEY CC UNDER-13s

Horley under-13s won by eight runs in an exciting, closely fought game against Purley.

The team have stepped up a level in competition this year by entering the Surrey Invitational Tier One and this marks their first victory.

The highlights in Horley’s innings were opener Aidan Spalding and captain Henry Grimwood both retiring at 50 as Horley reached 166-3 in their 25 overs. Horley then bowled Purley out for 158 in 24.3 overs.

There were two wickets from fast bowler Sam Terry, and three and two wickets respectively from spin bowlers Aidan Spalding and Khyan Patel.

Grimwood also picked up a wicket, Sam Armitage got a caught-and-bowled and Artie Hoskins a runout.

HORLEY CC UNDER-11s

Horley under-11s beat Salfords in the first round of the Surrey Junior Cup Tier Two.

Salfords batted first and made 68-3 in 15 overs and Horley managed to reach the target with three overs to spare and just one wicket lost.

Henrick Cook hit 22 not out for Horley and took two wickets. Thomas Jowett got 20 not out, Achilles Pereira took an excellent catch and there was good captaincy by Ollie Kilborn.
