Ifield get caught out by Lindfield

Ifield lost by 36 runs in a game that on the day was decided by Lindfield's greater catching ability and a stroke of misfortune on the field.

The visitors won the toss and openers Clark and Shivnarain put on a steady 67 before Clark walked straight past one from Guru Kedarnath and was bowled for 20 from 76 balls.

New batsman Lawrence continued the cautious approach but was a touch unlucky with a ball that kept low and was LBW to Kedarnath for 15 to leave Lindfield at 87 for 2.

Shivnarain was playing the anchor role but was fortunate to survive two catching chances when on 16 and 38 and he went onto reach 51 off 106 balls before being caught in the deep by Dorrington off Parekh.

The solid platform allowed Lindfield’s middle order to accelerate the score without ever really getting away from the Ifield spinners.

James (34), Sawyer (36) and Wilson Yelverton (24) all made solid contributions and enabled Lindfield to finish on 195 for 5 off 53 overs but crucially Ifield had to complete the last five overs of the innings with only 10 men when Daniel Groves injured a finger attempting a catch on the boundary and he had to make a dash to casualty to get a dislocated finger seen to.

Having chased down 200 the previous week Ifield felt that they were very much in the game but unlike Lindfield they made anything other than a solid start and Dorrington, Atkins and Kedarnath were all back in the pavilion with the score only on 29.

There were the starts of partnerships between firstly skipper Jack Groves and Joe Cooke and then Cooke and Barton but once all three of them had gone for 18, 32 and 7 respectively Ifield were in trouble at 90 for 6.

Graeme Dean went without any addition to the score but Parekh and Pratik Patel then put on a patient partnership of 52 to take the score to 142 for 8 before Patel edged one to the keeper for 15.

Groves returned from hospital in time to pad up and walk straight in at number 10 but with only 5 overs to go and over 50 still needed it was a big ask and it got even bigger when Parekh went just one run later for 30 runs off 54 balls.

To Ifield’s credit they went for an unlikely win rather than try and bat out for a draw and Groves hit Shivnarain for 16 off 5 balls before the last ball of the over had him hit trapped in front LBW and the home side were all out for 159.

On another day Ifield might have won this game but they will go into this weekend derby game away to Three Bridges aiming to bounce back.
