SUSSEX COUNTY LEAGUE ROUND-UP: Top five win their games while Three Bridges prop up table

HASTINGS and Preston Nomads kept their unbeaten starts to the Sussex Premier League going ahead of the clash between the two sides next week.

All the top five won their games, while at the bottom, Three Bridges prop up the table just behind Pulborough.

Hastings rattled up 273 all out at Brighton and Hove as Adam Maharaj-Newman hit 111 and Jason Finch 63, for the home side skipper Matt Wood took 5- 68.

Brighton were then dismissed for 231 despite a patient 55 from Matt Green and 36 from Curtis Ford, 16 year-old Harry Finch took 3-25.

Preston Nomads won by a narrow three wickets at home to Roffey who made 188 - 9 declared after being put in. In that total skipper Mike Norris made 54 and Simon Shivnarain 38.

For Nomads Carl Simon took 3 - 46 and Stephen Rigg 3 - 47.

Then Joe Gatting led the way to victory, the Sussex player hit 112 off 91 balls including 18 fours and a six but Nomads were, at one time, 128 - 6 before they recovered to win, for Roffey Aussie paceman Andrew McGorian took 6 for 81.

Horsham were dismissed for 182 at Pulborough who are so far without a victory after their promotion last season.

Skipper Craig Gallagher his 65 and Will Beer 58 as Kuldeep Rawat grabbed 7 - 49 for the home side.

But wickets tumbled after tea as Pulborough were dismissed for 107 in 41.4 overs, Sam Cushing took 4 - 18.

There was drama at East Grinstead where the home side won of the very last ball by 76 runs against bottom club Three Bridges.

Put in, Grinstead declared at 281 - 5 with Aussie Matt Sugg hitting his second century in successive weeks, he made 170 not out and Sussex youngster Lewis Hatchett made 60, there were two wickets each for Hisham-ul-Haq and Chad Barrett.

Bridges’ reply started slowly but Hisham-Ul-Haq cracked 81 and James Chadburn made 61 but then the innings subsided and four wickets fell in the last two overs and eight in the last 11, with Craig Fowle bowling Ollie Blandford with the last scheduled ball of the game.

Fowle took 3 - 46, Hatchett 3 - 30 and Ian Sturmer 4 - 50.

Eastbourne enjoyed their second outright win with a four wicket victory at Chichester after the home side had posted 238 - 8 declared of which Matt Gregory hit a superb 163 not out while Josh Presland, for Eastbourne, took 6 - 122.

Eastbourne skipper Mark Tomsett then made his second unbeaten century in three League innings to date to take his side to victory at 237 - 6, he made 117 not out.

St.James’s have moved to the top of Division Two after winning by five wickets at Haywards Heath.

They lead Cuckfield by a single point, both have won three of their four games so far.

St.James’s put Haywards Heath in and dismissed them for 97. Alex Ellis was top scorer with 45 while George Taylor grabbed 4 - 2.

The visitors then won the game with 102 - 5 from 27.1 overs.

Cuckfield beat Glynde by 21 runs after posting 176, of which Neil Fairhall cracked 45 and Dan Bowman made 34, Joe Adams took 6 - 49 for the visitors.

Adams was then top scorer for Glynde but it could not stop his side tumbling to 155 all out as 15 year-old Josh Hayward took 4 - 36.

Ifield produced the surprise of the day when winning by 33 runs in a low scoring game at home to previous leaders Worthing.

Tom Chambers took 4 - 23 as Ifield struggled to 146 all out but Worthing fared even worse at 113 all out as Gareth Christian took 4 - 34.

The other newly promoted side also won as Goring triumphed by two wickets at Stirlands.

Tim Robinson hit 106 in a Stirlands total of 179 all out but then Goring reached 180 - 8 with Ben Cartwright making 50.

The game between Bexhill and Lewes Priory was abandoned with Lewes 77 - 5 as a player was hit on the head and rushed to hospital by air ambulance.

Burgess Hill took over at the top of Division 3 East after winning a low scoring game at home to Keymer & Hassocks.

Electing to bat the hosts were bundled out for 135 as Michael Poole snared 7-69 in 21.3 overs. Keymer, however, capitulated for just 79. Simon Parsons took 6-13 in five overs including a quite incredible five wickets in five balls.

Lindfield moved up to second after a comfortable victory over last weekend’s leaders Sidley by 55 runs. Kevin Chamberlain hit 64 and captain Peter Vinall 51 as Lindfield reached 219-7 before bowling Sidley out for 164.

Uckfield Anderida are now joint third with Sidley after seeing off Crawley by four wickets at Southgate Park.

Crawley made 211-9 after being put into bat with Atif Elahi 58 and Salman Shah 45 leading the way. Scott Strangio and Peter Morris took three wickets apiece for Uckfield who eventually got over the line with Luke Forster hitting 126.

Crawley now find themselves propping up the table.

After two wins Crowhurst Park have now suffered two heavy defeats as Seaford thumped them by 216 runs.

Chris Stanyard 118 and Mark Sapwell 64 shared a second wicket partnership of 186 as Seaford declared on 285-8. Darren Moore added 40 not out while Paul Brookes took 3-78 for Park.

Brookes also made 21 with the bat but Tim Goddard 5-22 and two wickets each for John Smith and Matt Broad saw Crowhurst shot out for 69.

Ansty moved off the foot of the table after a convincing win against Hellingly.

Hellingly would have been disappointed to reach just 146 after winning the toss then Jonny Young 92 not out and Tom Jenkins 43 not out took Ansty to a nine wicket victory.

Findon are the new leaders of Division 3 West after a 6 wicket victory against Steyning. Steyning could only reach 162. Matt Sewell top scoring with 50.

In reply Findon’s Jack Metters made a second consecutive unbeaten half century finishing with 65 not out.

Middleton dropped to second after Bognor made a massive 308-7 after being put into bat. Michael Spaseski dominated the innings scoring 155, his innings containing no fewer than nine sixes.

Seb Gallagher hit 89 in Middleton’s reply as they finished on 204-7. Bognor remain third just one point behind Middleton.

Slinfold are now fifth after a high scoring draw at Henfield. Guy Thorne 68 and Tom Filby 59 ensured Slinfold set a challenging target as they reached 251-5.

Henfield however chased the target all the way to the finish with Brett Moore making 139 not out in their score of 246-7.

Littlehampton won a high scoring game at home to Arundel, overhauling their 255-8 to win by five wickets.

Ryan Chitty 76 not out, Rohan Ardley 70 and Justin Murray 39 were Arundel’s principle contributors while Daniel Rive countered with 5-52 from 18 overs.

Littlehampton however had Chris Heberlein 90 not out, Darren Bazeley 83 and Sajid Khan 42 to thank for getting them home. Neil Chitty took 2-77 for Arundel.

Billingshurst beat Pagham by 34 runs to move up to fourth place and leave their opponents at the foot of the table. Tim Weston made 70 in Billinghurst’s 176 while Andy Barr bagged 5-39 as Pagham were dismissed for 142.
