Five players have retained their places for a further year, whilst there are seven new faces in the setup, which is a combined programme between the ECB and Sussex themselves.

Leo Cammish, Josh Hayward, Elliott Hooper, Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Ben Shoare have all retained their places from last season’s programme, whilst Izzy Collis, Freya Davies, George Garton, Tom Haines, Beck Hemingway, Phil Salt and Paige Scholfield have all been selected for the first time.

All of the new players have showed that they could absorb new information and alter their techniques in the appropriate areas, whilst achieving the set goals and earning their one-year place on the programme. The twelve players have shown good evidence that they can portray the Sussex values which are of course a crucial part of Sussex Cricket and its Academy.

Of the new players selected, 15 year-old Haines is the youngest of the crop and the left-handed batsman has already represented both the Under-17’s and Development XI in the Sussex Premier League.

Garton is a 16-year old left-arm seamer who also played in the Under-17’s and Development XI last season, whilst making his Second Eleven debut in the Twenty20 tournament. Hemingway, also 16, is a left-handed batsman who has risen through the age groups and is a regular for Chichester Priory Park in the Sussex Premier League, and right-handed batsman Salt made his Second Eleven bow at the end of last season, shortly after turning 17.

This is the first time that as many as three girls have been selected in one intake, which reiterates the strength of the Women’s game in the County and underlines their success last season. Collis and Scholfield, both primarily batsmen and Davies, an all-rounder, all helped the Under-17’s Women’s team to their Championship triumph, as well as featuring for the senior team as they also won the coveted prize. Collis and Davies represented England Under-19’s in South Africa over the winter.

Out of the five players who kept their Academy places for 2014, all of them made significant inroads into the Second Eleven and will aim to continue their development this season. Cammish is a wicketkeeper-batsman, Hayward and Hooper are both left-arm spinners, Hudson-Prentice is an all-rounder and Shoare is a top-order batter.

Sussex’s Cricket Performance Manager and Academy Director Keith Greenfield said, “We are excited by the addition of so many new players to the group and very much looking forward to welcoming them on to the programme.

“We’re looking forward to continuing the hard work with those players who will be undertaking their second year. All of them had a role to play in the Second Eleven last season and we hope they will again progress this year.

“This is also the first time that three girls have been selected which goes to show the strength of the Women’s game in Sussex.”
