SUSSEX CRICKET LEAGUE ROUND-UP: Bridges win second successive game while Hastings top Premier League

HASTINGS continue to lead the Sussex Premier League ahead of Horsham, Preston Nomads and East Grinstead.

All the top four played drawn games on Saturday with some affected by the weather.

Pulborough remain bottom and still without a win after they drew their home game with fellow strugglers Chichester.

Brighton and Hove were Premier league winners in beating Eastbourne by 70 runs and Three Bridges won their second successive game with a win against Roffey by 83 runs. Brighton batted first after winning the toss against Eastbourne and they were bowled out for 168 as Ed Giddins grabbed 6-35, Luke Wells, with 52, was top scorer for the home side.

Eastbourne then capitulated to 98 all out as leg-spinner Patrick Spencer took 7-26 while Chad Chisholm, with 29, was Eastbourne’s most successful batsman.

Hisam-Ul-Haq led the way for Three Bridges as they raced to 285-3 declared at home to Roffey. He was well supported with 77 not out from James Chadburn and 64 not out from skipper Danny Alderman.

In reply Roffey were dismissed for 202 as Aamar Khan top scored with 71 and skipper Michael Norris made 59.

For Bridges Chad Barrett took 3-41, Jigga Parekh 3-12 and Adul Khan 3-82.

A hailstorm hit the game at Fulking between Preston Nomads and East Grinstead and when the teams returned to the field play was drastically reduced.

East Grinstead made 178-6 declared after being put in after, at one time, being 76-5. Lewis Hatchett hit 53 and James Adkin 40.

In reply Nomads struggled to 108-7 with Hatchett taking 3-38 and Craig Fowle 3-33.

Horsham batted first at Hastings and reached 243-7 declared with 56 not out from Matt Henry and 47 from skipper Craig Gallagher.

Kirk Wernars took 2-70, Josh Poysden 2-57 and Jason Finch 2-55.

In reply Hastings reached 210-8 at stumps with 61 not out from Max Finzel and 41 from Jason Finch.

Matt Henry took 4-68 and former Somerset leg-spinner Michael Munday took 2052 on his Horsham debut.

Pulborough had the better of the bottom of the table clash against Chichester but the draw means the clubs remain as the bottom two with Pulborough yet to win a game and Chichester’s only win has been against the Sussex Development XI.

Rohit Jagota made 86 and Tom Crump 53 to take Pulborough to 232-4 declared.

In reply Chichester struggled to 130 for 6 with opener Matt Gregory carrying his bat for 62 not out.

For the home side Canada World Cup bowler Harvir Baidwan took 2-18 and Jagota 2-12.

In Division Two Worthing lead the way ahead of Cuckfield and Haywards Heath.

All three clubs won on Saturday and all three have won five of their seven starts so far.

Worthing were put in at home to St.James’s and made 181-9 declared of which Benn Challen was top scorer with 37 as Paddy Jolly took 4-62.

In reply, St.James crashed to 94 all out as Andy Lutwyche took 5-32, Ben Whitehad with 25 was the pick of the visitors’ batting.

A marathon bowling spell from Nick Patterson for Cuckfield bowled out Bexhill for 186, he took 7-68 in 27 unchanged overs as Jack Richardson made 43 and Tom Powell 38 for the home side.

Tom Mole then hit 93 not out and Dan Bowman made 58 to take Cuckfield to a winning score of 189-2.

The start was delayed by a wet pitch at Haywards Heath where visiting Ifield decided to field after winning the toss.

But Haywards Heath rushed to 213- 8 declared in 45 overs with skipper Steve Kingcome making 56 and Graeme Dean taking 4-41.

In reply Ifield were dismissed for 126 with Greg Barton their top scorer, he made 37.

For the home side Ollie Graham took 4-18, Matt Junk 3-24 and Josh Woodfield 3-18.

Goring enjoyed a three wicket home win against Lewes Priory who have now dropped to bottom of Division Two.

Lewes were put in and dismissed for 187 of which Josh Harrison made 53 as Matt Keen took 6-53.

In reply the home side won at 191-7 of which Dan Pitham made 84.

Stirlands hung on for a draw at home to Glynde who were dismissed for 175 having won the toss.

In that total Ollie Bailey made 45 as Alex Garlick took 8-99 in 27 overs.

At stumps Stirlands had reached 125-9 with Garlick making 31 as Bailey took 3-28 and Dominic Shepheard 3-32.

The leadership of Division 3 East has changed hands once again as Burgess Hill beat Ansty.

Burgess Hill declared on 252-7 as Tom Trowbridge 110 not out and Jack Simpson 67 put the home side to the sword.

Ansty were then skittled for just 87 with Ian Simpson claiming 5-30.

Sidley lost to Hellingly by 23 runs in a high scoring game.

Hellingly made 259-5 led by Scott Pearce 144 not out and Greg Devlin 41.

Peter King’s leg spin brought him 2-50 and though Sidley chased the total to the end, the left arm spin of Gavin Sutherland 6-62 proved decisive.

John Haffenden struck 59 and Paul Thompson 54 for Sidley.

Seaford also won handsomely at Uckfield by 96 runs.

Ryan Hodkinson 49, Mark Sapwell 46 and Jamie Goddard 45 ensured a challenging total which proved too much as Uckfield finished on 137.

Kevin Morton hit 45 in vain while Chris Stanyard took 4-30 as Uckfield finished well short, Lindfield and Keymer & Hassocks ended in stalemate as Keymer closed on 124-8 in reply to Lindfield’s 162-6 led by Bret Silvey 59 and Kevin Chamberlain 48.

Crowhurst Park got back to a winning habit as they beat Crawley by 100 runs.

Brad Payne 78 not out, Paul Brookes 51 and Martin Menezes 42 ensured consistency down the order although Rashid took 4-40 for the visitors.

Salman Shah hit 39, Atif Elahi 2-38 fought a lone hand as Crawley collapsed from 92-2 to 137 all out. Vic Walcott took 2-2 and Australian debutant Shawn Irlam had a spell of 5-9 (5-50 in total) as 92-2 became 137 all out.

The top two sides in Division 3 West both scored maximum point victories to open up the gap between themselves and the rest of the division.

Slinfold bowled Findon out for 127 and looked poised to end Findon’s five match winning sequence as Hayden McIntyre took 6-47.

However Slinfold were then blown away for just 60 as James Iago did the damage with 5-21.

Bognor Regis won convincingly at Arundel to maintain second spot.

They posted 237-6 after being asked to bat first then dismissed Arundel for 140 with just 11 balls of the match remaining.

Steyning moved up to third as Pagham’s dismal season shows no immediate sign of improvement.

Andy Isaacs helped dismiss them for 130 taking 6-47 with his left arm spin.

Steyning had earlier reached 226-7 with Gary Hunt top scoring with 68, Hywel Jones added a further 63.

Billingshurst are now fourth as Henfield were shot out for 90 before making the visitors battle hard for their win, six wickets were lost in doing so.

Littlehampton won the toss and batted against Middleton and their 239-9 proved to be far too much for their hosts as James Askew 95, Chris Heberlein 55 not out got amongst the runs.

Though Brandon Hanley took 6-67 Middleton were all out for just 135.
