Sussex Cricket League round-up May 10

Rain ruined the opening round of matches in the Sussex Cricket League on Saturday with nearly the entire programme wiped out.

The majority of matches were abandoned: some without a ball being bowled while others were settled using limited overs or 20/20 rules.

Horsham went to the top of the Premier League when they collected a maximum 30 points from their five-wicket win away to Bexhill.

Opening bowler Stuart Whittingham took the first four wickets to fall during a match-winning spell of 4-27.

there were also three runs out and spinner Michael Munday took 2-10.

Bexhill were mismissed for 118 in 44 overs with Max Finzel scoring 30 and Shawn Johnson making 27.

Sussex player Will Beer struck 44 and Ben Shoare 44 not out including a stand of 70 for the second wicket as they hit they reached their target for the loss of five wickets in 36.1 overs.

Roffey went into second place when they won a 20/20 battle with Eastbourne by 35 runs.

In a game which had a delayed start of 3pm and then suffered several rain interruptions, Roffey set a target of 126-7 in their 20 overs.

Opening batsman Rohit Jagota made an early 24 but the best partnership was a fifth wicket stand of 39 by Dan Smith (32) and Indian overseas player Kuldeep Rawat who hit 30 on his debut.

Craig Eaves (3-24) and Stuart Pulford (3-21) were the pick of the Eastbourne bowlers.

Rawat then made the perfect start to his Roffey career by taking the first three wickets of Eastbourne’s reply in a spell of 3-17 off four overs.

Roffey’s bowlers kept the pressure on with spinner George Fleming taking 2-9 before Rohit Jagota cleared up with 3-5 off 9 balls.

East Grinstead held champions Preston Nomads to a draw in a full length game.

Grinstead’s Ollie Graham took 3-12 and struck 57 while team-mate Craig Fowle bagged 4-37 as Nomads finished their innings on 106-8.

Earlier Grinstead had set a target of 215-5 decelared in 52.3 overs thanks to Graham and opener Will Adkin (42).

Brighton (216-7 off 53 overs) drew with Hastings (142-6 off 47 overs) and collected 13 points.

In Division 2 Ifield and St James jointly lead the table after clinching maximum 30-points wins.

Ifield made a total of 154 all out from 52.5 overs thanks to 59 by captain and Australian overseas player Clayton Caltsounis.

Shane de Beer was Goring’s best bowler with 4-29 while Ross Baumann took 3-18.

Raza Ali claimed a superb 5-20 and spinner Russell Jacob took 3-22 as Ifield dismissed Goring for 94.

Billingshurst (59-10 off 34.3 overs) suffered a nine-wicket defeat at the hands of St James who made 61 in 11.1 overs for the loss of only wicket.

Sean Heather crafted a tremendous 100 to set-up Middleton (180-5) to beat Worthing (176-9) by five wickets. Worhing’s stars were Sam Jones (55) and John Glover (57).

Lindfield (109-2) (16pts) beat Findon (103-7) (10pts) in a 20/20 match.

Glynde lead Division 3 after beating Burgess Hill by five wickets.

Dale Tranter took 4-23 from an economical 12 overs to restrict Hill to 147 all out from 40.4 overs.

Hill’s Jack Simpson took 3-38 in 15 overs as Glynde reached their target for the loss of five wickets as their batters all chipped in.

Pagham (195-8 off 53 overs) (28pts) gained a 69-run win against Bognor Regis (126-10 off 39.2 overs) (9pts)

Ansty (215-7) (13pts) drew with Rottingdean (158-60 (6pts) while the games between Crawley Eagles v Pulborough and Haywards Heath v Stirlands were both abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Three clubs lead Division 4 after winning their games with maximum points.

Slinfold’s pacey Barbados overseas player Akeem Jordan took 4-37 and joint topscored with the bat with unbeaten captain Guy Thorne with 42.

Akeem combined with Phil Awcock (3-17) to dismiss Hellingly for 96 in 42.5 overs.

In reply Slinfold overtook Hellingly off 18.4 overs to cliam a seven-wicket victory.

Dave Kennett led the way with a 50 and Olly Collins made 26 not out on the way to Steyning’s match-winning score of 164-6.

Bowlers Brian Scholtz took 4-30 and Andy Isaacs grabbed 3-30 as Steyning bowled Portslade out for 131.

Jamie Carter bagged an excellent 3-8 for Keymer who beat Lewes Priory by eight wickets.

Lee Pittavino and Michael Johnson were unbeaten on 28 and 22 respectively as Keymer overtook Lewes’ 62 after just 12.5 overs for the loss of two wickets.

Ben Thatcher took 6-62 for Wisborough Green 130-10 (12pts) but could not prevent them from slipping up against Henfield (153-10) (24pts).

Crawley’s home game against Rye was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
