Sussex to hold formal Umer Rashid commemoration at forthcoming match

There will be cricket for the first time this season at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove this weekend when Sussex will welcome neighbours Hampshire for a Pre-Season Friendly match.

Play will begin at 11.30am on Saturday and half an hour earlier on Sunday at 11.00am to allow for an extended lunch break to commemorate the ten-year anniversary of the death of Sussex’s Umer Rashid.

Rashid, along with his brother Burhan, died in tragic circumstances a decade ago on Sussex’s pre-season tour of Grenada. He was only 26 when he drowned in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue his brother from Concord Falls. He had been with the County for three seasons at the time and was as much admired for his friendliness and personality as his impressive left-hand batting and slow-left arm bowling.

There will be a formal commemoration during the interval in and around the Grosvenor Park Executive Suite in the South-East corner of the ground. A number of guests have been invited to the ceremony and it will be a chance for all connected with Sussex County Cricket Club, both past and present, to remember Umer.

Chief Executive of Sussex Cricket Dave Brooks said, “Remembering Umer and Burhan is always an important and emotional part of our pre-season, and none more so than this year on the 10th anniversary.

“It will be our pleasure to welcome their family and friends for what will hopefully be a very special day”.

Entrance is free to all for both days of the match. The Spen Cama Pavilion will not be available for use during this match due to functions, so catering facilities for Members and all other supporters will be available in the BrightonandHoveJobs.com Boundary Rooms. All other seating areas will be available.
