Extra special Bexhill triumph

TWO extra time goals saw Bexhill United finally shake off the attentions of a dogged Wadhurst United outfit at the Polegrove on Saturday.

Dave Carey and Alex Hesmer struck in each additional period to clinch a 4-2 win in the second round of the Hastings FA Intermediate Cup.

Mark Funnell spotted the run of Carey who spun his defender and bore down on the Wadhurst goal. Carey waited for the goalkeeper to commit himself before finishing in style.

Hesmer then made sure of victory by scoring with his second touch after coming on as a substitute, rounding off a superb six-man move which covered virtually the entire pitch.

"It was a very good game, a typical cup tie with plenty of passion," said Bexhill manager Billy Trivett. "It was pleasing because we needed to play good football to win. It was a real test because they are a difficult side to beat and it's a benchmark for the rest of the season even though it wasn't a league game."

Fellow Sussex Division Three side Wadhurst opened the scoring after only five minutes direct from a free kick which curled beyond the defensive wall and went in off the post.

Darren Witham equalised from the penalty spot after a visiting defender had been penalised for handball and just before half time the Bexhill midfielder struck again in rather more spectacular fashion, spotting the narrowest of gaps to lob the goalkeeper from 30 yards.

Chances were at a premium during the second half as play was confined to the middle third until three minutes from time when an under pressure Dickie Anderson misdirected an attempted clearance and headed the ball into his own net.

Trivett said: "The further it was going on in extra time the further we pulled away. They knocked the ball about well in extra time."
